It looks as though the Minecraft movie money train just keeps on choo-chooing away, as the film has generated another $80 million in its second weekend in movie theatres in the USA. That doesn’t even include worldwide ticket sales, which continue to fly off popcorn counters around the globe.
According to Variety, the film remains number one at the box office. The outlet notes that the $80 million second weekend revenue marks a roughly 50% decrease in domestic sales from the $163 million opening weekend, but that’s the norm for new releases. In fact, while 50% sounds like a lot, it’s actually not too shabby historically speaking.
According to PBS Frontline, a film that only loses 30-40% after its first week tends to be a box office success. While 50% is obviously more than that, the record-breaking opening performance of the Minecraft movie puts fears of commercial success to bed.
The film has done so well in fact, that it’s caused a surge in Minecraft players! Add on top of that the trend of kids and teenagers going into screenings and screaming “Chicken Jockey“, it’s clear that the film has firmly made camp in the cultural zietgeist.
This stellar performance has also kicked off discussions around a second Minecraft movie. While this isn’t much of a shock, it does establish that Minecraft as a multi-media presense in our lives isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
