Phew, Skyblivion’s team says Bethesda’s been in touch to say for sure it has “no intention of shutting down our project”, so we’re still on for two Oblivion remasters this year

Good news, it looks like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered arriving as real thing you can now actually play won’t be a harbinger of bad times for Skyblivion.

The team behind the massive Oblivion remaster Skyrim modding project has revealed that Bethesda’s been in touch to tell it there’s nothing to worry about, as the publisher has no plans to try and take down a mod that’s been in the works since long before the official remaster was even rumoured.

“Huge thanks to our friends at Bethesda Studios for their continued support of Skyblivion,” the modders wrote in a tweet not long after the official remaster dropped, “As massive fans, we’re beyond grateful for the generous gift of Oblivion Remastered game keys for our entire modding team! This means so much to us. Thank you for everything,
Bethesda.”

It then added in a reply: “Also, to clear up any confusion Bethesda made it clear that they have no intention of shutting down our project.”

Via Discord, the team reiterated what it’s previously said about its own project in relation to the official remaster: “We’ll continue to work on Skyblivion and get it in all of your hands later this year. For those of you following us since the beginning and to those who may have just learned about us we can’t wait to show off more of our complete remake of Oblivion within the Skyrim engine. There is room for both the official remaster and our fan-led remake and we – the fans – are the ultimate winners.”

Cool, it’s great to have this confirmed, even if it seemed likely the mod would be ok since it had survived all the way until Oblivion Remastered’s release – after all, games aren’t developed overnight and if Bethesda/Virtuos had wanted to get rid of Skyblivion for reasons related to the official remaster, it’d have no obvious reason to wait around until now before wheeling out the lawyers.

Skyblivion project lead Kyle ‘Rebelzize’ Rebel alluded to exactly that when we spoke to him just after Oblivion Remastered details leaked, saying: “At the end of the day [Skyblivion] only exists because Bethesda allowed it, so I guess if the official remake is real it’s good that we were still allowed to exist at all.”

So, there you go. You can join the ranks of those playing Oblivion Remastered if you like, or wait for Skyblivion, or play both, or play neither. You control the buttons you press in life.
