Long eliminated from playoff consideration, the Los Angeles Angels did a bit of house cleaning Friday as two players were designated for assignment: infielder Luis Guillorme and designated hitter Willie Calhoun.

To take their spots on the active roster, the Angels recalled infielders Niko Kavadas and Jack Lopez.

Kavadas, 25, was inserted into the starting lineup for Friday’s home game against the Atlanta Braves and hitting in the cleanup spot as the designated hitter for his major league debut.

Kavadas was acquired from the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline, along with three other minor leaguers, for right-handed reliever Luis Garcia.

In 94 combined games for Triple-A Worcester and Salt Lake, Kavadas was batting .264 with 19 home runs and 67 RBIs this season. He had 64 games at first base and 30 at DH.

Lopez, 31, played seven games with the Red Sox in 2021. He was batting .274 with 12 home runs and 57 RBIs at Salt Lake. He has split time at three infield positions and all three outfield positions this season.

Guillorme, 29, batted .218 with seven doubles and six RBIs in 59 combined games for the Angels and Braves this season. He was acquired by the Angels in a May trade for a player to be named later.

Calhoun, 29, batted .245 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 68 games. In eight major league seasons with four different clubs, including six seasons with the Texas Rangers, Calhoun is a career .241 hitter with 42 home runs and 140 RBIs in 369 games.
