Nintendo has today officially unveiled Mario Kart World, one of the games that will be launching right alongside the Switch 2. You may remember that the game was teased in the initial Switch 2 reveal back in January.
At the time, many assumed it’s yet another port of Mario Kart 8, but it is in fact a new game – and a major one at that. Mario Kart World will be retailing for $79.99 / £74.99.
In the trailer we get a big showcase of loads of new races, new powerups, and obviously a fresh new look. It also has a weather system, which will change how races turn out. But perhaps the biggest feature is the open world ish gameplay, allowing you to drive off course to other courses around the world. It’s coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch 2 too, so you’ll have to grab the new console to play it.
Mario Kart World is the follow-up to the multi-million seller Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which started life on Wii U as Mario Kart 8. Since then, Nintendo re-released it on Switch with a few upgrades, and continued adding new tracks and features to the game over the years.
If you want to learn more about Mario Kart World, there’s a Mario Kart Direct on April 17 that’ll fill you in on all the details.
Mario Kart World is also the first new game in the long-running series in years, and Nintendo clearly took this opportunity to expand on the concept in several key ways. Mario Kart World will be released worldwide on the same day the Nintendo Switch 2 does, on June 5.
