Of course Elden Ring is coming to Switch 2 – and you’ll get to play it this year

Perhaps one of the least surprising reveals on today’s big Nintendo Switch 2 reveal Direct was that Elden Ring is on its way to the upcoming console. FromSoftware’s phenomenal action RPG launched on every console when it released in 2022 – except for the Switch.

The console’s aging hardware was likely the reason behind that decision, but the Switch 2’s upgrades have clearly made that transition possible. Today, we got our first look at the game running on Nintendo’s new console.

The trailer was very brief, showing mostly bits of gameplay that looked to be running on Switch 2 hardware. The Tarnished Edition includes the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, as well as new weapons, armor, and a new skin for Torrent. The new content will make its way to other platforms, too.

The Tarnished Edition arrives sometime this year, but we didn’t get an actual release date.

Prior to today’s announcement, the only way to play Elden Ring on the go required owning a handheld PC, such as a Steam Deck. Soon, millions of Nintendo fans will be able to do that without dipping their toes into PC waters.

Most of FromSoftware’s Souls and Souls-like games never made their way to Nintendo platforms, so perhaps this release represents a new era where Nintendo’s consoles will be part of the line-up the next time the studio releases a new game.
