From Software has announced that Elden Ring has sold over 30 million copies worldwide since the game’s release back in 2022. This places it among some of the best selling games of all time, among classics like Borderlands 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Diablo 3.

Initially launching on February 25 2022, the game would later get a major DLC expansion with Shadow of the Erdtree on June 21. Between the launch and now, 30 million players across PC and console have hopped into The Lands Between. This is an especially impressive number when you consider the challenging reputation the game has – people knew about the hardship and took the game on anyway!

The game has gotten a lot of love commercially (obviously) and critically. Both the original game and its DLC received favourable reviews, and the leap from the Dark Souls series to an open world format proved popular to both the masses and critics alike. The game maintained the Dark Souls’ difficulty, though did earn itself select nerfs and balance adjustments throughout its life to make things a touch easier.

What this 30 million figure allows From Software to do is anyone’s guess, though it’s clear that the company is knowledgeable of its status as a beloved title. Elden Ring Nightreign, a spin-off co-operative game, is set to launch soon making use of much of Elden Ring’s world and assets albeit with an interesting spin. Beyond that, it’s not too absurd a prediction to say the company will continue mining gold from this particular genre mine.
