After the Minecraft movie broke all the box office records and grossed 1.3 billion dollars, it should come as no surprise that there’s talk of a sequel, and according to director, Jared Ness, those talks certainly are happening. One assumes around how much money the next one could make, and chicken jockeys.
In an interview with Deadline, the director sat down and spilled the beans on the sequel potentially happening when asked by the movie outlet. This is after Ness politely hampered expectations of a Napolean Dynamite sequel mind you, so it’s not all roses, especially for old folks like you and I.
Ness states, “Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
As Ness states, there’s so much room for a Minecraft sequel, it being based around such a vast open world sandbox game with so much history behind it. Not only that but, given the open player-created aspect to the game writers could really do anything they want with it narratively too. Due to how popular they’ve proven to be, you could easily assume that the characters introduced in the film, like Jack Black as Steve, could make a return. But you could really open the door to all manner of other characters and locales. Herobrine, anyone?
That being said, Ness already pointed at the inclusion of another character in a sequel, when it does come around. One that was hinted at during the Minecraft movie post-credits scene. “The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in Minecraft. It’s Steve (Black) and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.”
So there we have it, in all likelihood expect another Minecraft movie, and perhaps say a prayer for the cinema staff currently cleaning up spilled popcorn and drinks in those future showings.
