You remember NetEase revealing last week that it was planning to celebrate April Fools’ day by bringing a Venom twerk emote to Marvel Rivals, and us being like ‘please say this isn’t a joke because we’ve written about it now’.
Well, not only is the emote a real thing, since it’s been deployed it’s begun taking over the hearts and minds of the rivals community by storm in the way you might have predicted wiggling symbiussy would – cue a bunch of clips showing matches devolving into Venom twerk-offs so hypnotising they look like they can grind an entire firefight to a halt.
Today’s the first day the emote’s grabbable in-game as a reward, and plenty of people have done so. As a result, the Marvel Rivals subreddit is awash with video posts boasting titles like “Venom’s Got the Moves… and Quick Play is Losing It” and the aforementioned “Thought I was the main character…then Venom started throwing it back…“
Battles are full of Venoms interrupting the chaos to mesmerise people by twerking solo, twerking as a duo, or twerking as a big group, in some cases while other characters try to get as close to the booty as possible, erect branch shields as Groot to save themselves from seeing the cheeks, or in the case of some Lunas, whip out her DJ emote.
In terms of that last one, some players are already trying to petition NetEase to make Luna’s deck-shuffling a looping emote “so we can dance with Venom”.
What effect is all of this messing about having on matches, you ask? Well, aside from making a few purists angry by reducing games to a crowd of players just watching the booty move, one player sums it up thusly: “Venom’s emote isn’t just for laughs — it’s a tactical distraction.”
Basically, if opponents get caught staring at it, any of your teamates who’re playing attention might have an easy kill on their hands. Classic. If you want to try busting down yourself, the emote’s unlockable from 1AM GMT/8PM ET on April 1/March 31 until April 4 at 1AM GMT, which is 8PM ET on April 3.
