Back in 2023 Capcom showed up on our phones and computers in a big trenchoat, opened up shop, and declared “whatya buying?” to the world. It turns out the answer for a lot of people was the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which today has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. That’s a lot!
The game, a modern remake of the genre defining 3rd person survival horror classic, is the latest in Capcom’s loving recreations of their legendary horror IP. The fourth game, which took the series in a more action-heavy direction back in 2005, held a grip on players’ hearts almost two decades later. Faithfully reborn with new graphics and some tweaks here and there, it turns out the game has been a massive success for the Japanese industry giant.
This milestone for the game was revealed on Capcom’s Japanese website, as well as the fact that the Resident Evil 4 Remake was the fastest to reach such a lofty figure in the series’ history. In addition, Capcom states in the post that both Resident Evil 7 and 2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake have together passed 15 million units sold. Resident Evil Village is no slouch, pushing past 11 million units sold, while my personal favourite the Resident Evil 3 Remake shot past 10 million units sold.
All eyes are on the future with Resident Evil. With Capcom leveraging the IP to both create entirely new entries to the series and remaking old favourites, what the next game or two will be remains a tantalizing mystery. Many expect a remake of Resident Evil 5 is on the cards, itself another step towards a more aciton-packed Resident Evil. Whereas the latest original titles seem more rooted in horror, providing that spooky fix to old and new fans alike.
As the remakes continue to churn through the more popular mainline games, there may even be merit in remaking more obscure titles. Code Veronica is beloved by a portion of the fanbase, and Resident Evil 0 certainly experimented with the dual protagonist quirk to the series with exchangable items and quick-swappable characters.
Regardless of where Capcom decides to take the series next, it’s proven a venture fans are absolutely on board with. Resident Evil is an incredibly strong IP at the moment, and as long as quality remains consistant, it’s hard to imagine that changing for the worse any time soon.
